A license number is a unique identifier that verifies an individual. This number can be obtained in 2 ways.
If you do not have a WA state ID card, do not worry! You can sign up online for free to obtain your License number via License eXpress. Visit our DOL Resources page for video guides to help you sign up.
If you already have a WA state ID card, Look at the top of your card where it says 'LIC# __________________'. It begins with WDL followed by 9 numbers and letters
Example: WDL123ABC456

The old style of WA state ID license number has 12 numbers and letters. This typically starts with the first 5 letters of your last name, your first name initial, middle name initial, three numbers and two letters.
Example: KHALI*ZAA2BC
A valid original photo-ID card document. Must bring the physical copy, not electronic.
Passport, State ID, School ID, Employment Authorization Card, Permanent Resident Card, Green Card, Travel Visa, Asylum Document, Military ID.

There are two ways to obtain your Instruction Permit:
1) Must have an existing, valid Knowledge Test score of at least 80%
2) If under 18 years old, enroll in a teen driver's ed course
You may visit any DOL office or obtain this online via DOL License Express Account
Fee to DOL: $25.00
Note: The Instruction Permit is valid for 1 year and can be renewed once after it initially expires.
For the most reliable preparation, study the WA Drivers Guide book which offers the best and most accurate information that's reflected in the Knowledge Test.
Avoid using online quizzes or unofficial practice tests for the Knowledge Test exam, as they may not be accurate or current.
Upon completing your Driving Test, the exam scores will be recorded in the DOL database within 24 hours.
After you've passed the Driving Test, go to your local DOL office with the required fees and ID documents to obtain your WA Driver's License.
